Research Facility Relocation

Origin:

New Jersey

Destination:

Nebraska

Objective:

Coordinate the transportation of a wide range of fixed and portable assets, varying in size and handling requirements and within a tight timeline, using 21 truckload shipments from two origins in New Jersey to four possible destinations.

CHALLENGE:
As with most projects, the timeline for this relocation was in flux until one week before it was destined to take place. We knew various equipment types were required, including 53-foot dry boxes, flatbeds, RGN’s and lowboys to support movement of the different assets, but we did not know many specifics regarding the dimensions and weight of the assets being transported. As the project timeline changed, the availability of the specialized equipment necessary became scarce and new providers were needed. However, the price of the relocation was agreed upon and solidified 30 days before the transport, so the new providers had to be competitive and adhere to the same rates.

SOLUTION:
Amer-Trans Logistics was able to gather bits and pieces of information from the client and develop a dynamic optimization tool that allowed us to set assumptions regarding size dimensions and the quantity of the assets to ship. This tool allowed us to interactively make over 20 real-time revisions as the plan ebbed, flowed and changed with new information. The trailer types changed, the quantity of those same trailer types changed, the origin for those trailer types changed, as did the destination. What was an “origin to destination” job soon became multi-stop trucks that had set delivery appointments that required us to track and trace through delivery.

RESULTS:
The face of the project changed repeatedly as did the directives for the carriers regarding origins and destinations. The team remained flexible and went back to the drawing board every time something changed, no matter how seemingly small. With specialized equipment (lowboys or RGN’s) the carriers commit to origins and destinations and set rates accordingly, and when you change either the route or destination it can dramatically change capacity, driver availability, and rates. We were able to accommodate all the requested changes with our dynamic tools, “can do” attitude and dedication. The project met the timeline expectations, budget expectations as well as customer satisfaction.
